Last night I spoke at the meeting we arranged at Barnhill Community Centre in protest at BAA’ s proposals to drive a road through our local cemetery at Cherry Lane as part of their plans to build a third runway at Heathrow. The meeting was packed with between 500 and 600 people, angry at the threat to the graves of their loved ones. People from all denominatons were there united in their oppposition to this monstrous plan. All had relatives buried in the cemetery and were distressed to learn about the threat to the resting place of their loved ones.
I have presented petitions to Parliament on this and raised the issue on the floor of the House of Commons with ministers, the prime minister and in debates. I made it clear that we are going to fight this all the way and if the Government refuses to listen then if this means direct action to prevent the bulldozers then so be it.
In the video above I interviewed Natasha La Mothe, who has worked so hard to launch this campaign. She deserves our thanks and support.

My maternal grandmother was buried here in 1939, when my own mother was just 14 months old. It has taken my mum 70 years to locate her mum’s resting place. The thought of anyone’s final resting place being tarmacked over in the name of progress beggars belief. Let these people rest in peace.

if the council allow this to happen then it can only mean that they believe in money before people.but we knew that anyway.
where do i take my fathers grandchildren to remember their grandfather?
on the road to terminal 5?
NEVER!how dare they be allowed to disrespect our dead?
if it was their families burial grounds would they allow it?
i think not….

David William Knowles a War Hero of just 28 years old, is buried in Cherry Lane Cemetry. As if giving up your life for this country isn’t enough. You are not even allowed to rest in peace. Shame on all that deem it economic to disturb the dead, whatever the gain, it is criminal. It’s about time we got our values right.

Hello,
My name is Natasha La Mohte. I started this campaign at the end of April 2008, and am Chair to the voluntary group, CLAD (Cherry Lane Against Development). I have not been on this blog for some time and am heartened to see that so many people have asked what they can do to help.
Please go to our website http://www.cherrylane.org.uk where you can learn more about what you can do, what events are being held etc. Also you can sign up for a regular email about the campaign.
At this stage, I would like to thank John McDonnell on behalf of our committee for standing side by side with us at every event we have held in the 18.5 months we have been going and for his contribution to the successful campaign that has been run.

This is a travesty.
I have several family members at rest their and, living overseas, will always visit when I leave Heathrow.
Far more importantly though, the disruption and sorrow that this will cause is beyond comprehension and all for the benefit of motorists!! I urge the authorities to have sense and for decency and goodness to prevail.

Well, the decision for the Heathrow expansion plans to go ahead, like most things the government allow, stem from greed. Lets all face it, I bet that more than 50% of flights to/from Heathrow are by passengers just passing through the airport a `hub’.
Perhaps No.10 Downing Street, or Geoff Hoons house could be knocked down to make way for another Tesco? Please, I would love to sign the go ahead for that one!!

Cherry Tree Lane Cemetary is a little bit of peace and greenery in the midst of what is an enormous mass of polution, concrete, cars, roads and lanes of traffic. To think that my dear father Ernie, can’t ‘rest in peace’ due to the selfish bosses of an enormous company. Why can’t they accept Heathrow is big enough and stop trying to keep up with everyone else! My Mum comes from Hayes and has watched it turn from a village to this great ugly mess it is now. My father was a traditional good English gentleman, the sort that we are now loosing. He loved cricket, football, church music (he had sung in a London church choir as a boy, before being evacuated during the war) etc etc. What can I do to help? Please keep me informed. Best regards, Lynne

In 2003 my father died after a 4 month spell in hospital. My uncle and I had to make the decision to turn the ventilator off and stop the medication and let my father die as he was no longer responding to treatment. 4 months of hoping he will pull through to singing to him whilst he died slowly but painlessly was hard enough but now I am faced with mourning his death all over again because of a new runway at heathrow!! I am horrified and appalled that this can even be considered. There are many many people laid to rest there, the loved ones of many of us that take comfort in going to visit them at what was supposed to be their final resting place! This cant be allowed to happen!!! PLEASE STOP THIS!!! I am heart broken!

Perhaps if you made decisions based on ethics rather than money, you might gain a little respect.
Lets all hope that one day, for your sake, your own loved ones arent tarmaced over, cos then you would know how sick we all feel.

I am so upset with the decision for another runway and access roads that I will have to exaplain the implications to my mother…I just cringe at the thought of having to break this news to her. The people who are we are sopposed to respect at the top of Government should be ashamed. For them is all about money, money money. Xmas has become all about money for them, and it seems that desicrating loved ones graves is no different for them. The government should really wake up to what is morally right and wrong.

I have relatives buried in the cemetery and I live local to the cemetery. When I found out about these horrific proposals I was utterly disgusted. I have not as yet had the misfortune to have to organise a closer family members funeral, but as far as I understand when a person passes away the family have to BUY the land for the proposed plot were the body is to be buried. So that plot of land is for thier loved one. Where do councils or anybody else have the right to make the decision as to who builds a road over our loved ones for ANY reason what so ever especially if it is for someone like BAA who have enough bearing on our enviroment already without having to go as far as disturbing our buried in thier graves. I have very strong belief in the fact that if a person has PAYED for a plot of land for the body to be buried THAT LAND IS THIERS!!!, let alone the loved one buried within it. Would BAA feel the same if people decided to dig up a spot on thier runway or in thier departure lounge to build a shed. I think they may object on the grounds that it is thier property, as the cemetery belongs to the people. I may stand to be corrected in terms of ownership but anyone would have a very hard time on correcting me as far as moral grounds go.

It is just unthinkable that the cemetery would be disturbed in anyway. What sick, deranged and heartless people at BAA sat round a Board table and decided that putting a road through a cemetery was a good idea. I bet whoever is responsible for this preposterous proposal does not have relatives or friends buried in Cherry Lane. We must all do whatever we can to stop this from happening.
