Afghanistan Debate in Parliament

Watch John on Parliament TV (opens in a new window)

I set out my views once again on the need to withdraw from Afghanistan in the debate that took place last month in the Commons. I voted along with 13 other MPs to seek a solution to the Afghan war based upon withdrawal of our troops and a negotiated settlement. I am deeply distressed at the continuing loss of life in Afghanistan and find it difficult to bear the sadness every time another of our young people loses their life in this war. We have to find a solution to this conflict. The debate has now moved on to find that solution.

Wikileaks has demonstrated what we have long suspected i.e.the “Special Relationship” is a complete myth.It also reveals that Obama doesn’t give a damn for us and thinks his important allies are in the East.Do you see Koreans and Japanese fighting and dying in Afghanistan? No. So why are our boys being killed there for the U.S. government which thinks it’s a good idea to keep its supposed ally “off balance”.Time to bring our troops home and put an end to all this “Special Relationship” nonsense once and for all.

I didn’t interpret that comment in such an imaginative way, Eric, he made it quite clear that he was referring to the size of the demonstration, it being the ‘biggest workers and students demonstration in years.’

“Just shows what can be done when people get angry. We must build on this”
