I visited the exhibition today (Saturday) of just some of the archaeological finds discovered from the excavations along the National Grid gas pipeline works along Yeading Brook in Hayes. The exhibition was held in our new community cafe/drop in centre at Welbeck Parade on Barnhill Estate. The excavations have discovered new bronze age and Roman settlements in Yeading. The findings of the digs will be assessed and written up, with the exhibits eventually being placed in the Museum of London. At next year’s local history conference, which I organise with the assistance of the local Hayes and Harlington History Society, I will be inviting the archaeologists from the pipeline excavation to come back and present their findings.

I was amazed to read about the archeological finds by the Yeading Brook which I frequently walk along. Whilst I principally interested in Industrial Sites mostly Canals, this is a great Find. Many thanks for informing us about it.

Thanks Alwyn.
I convene an annual local history conference and this year we focussed on buildings and heritage sites at risk. This has lead to the Council undertaking a comprehensive survey with us on local sites and buildings. In September I am convening a further conference to publish our results and hopefully to revive a local conservation panel to protect local our heritage and to campaign on buildings such as Benlow Works. This is one of my taget buildings and we are launching a local petition about this site. I am also seeking a further meeting with Engish Heritage to see what action can be taken to tackle the building’s deterioration. It is on English Heritage’s at risk list already. Rest assured I will continue to do all I can to preserve our wonderful local heritage.
Best wishes,
John

I am so pleased to see our MP is taking such an interest in our local history. There had been such a lot of development in recent years; so many buildings of historical interest have been neglected or destroyed with little or no consideration by the developers who have no interest in the community or our history.
Benlow Works an Edwardian industrial building in Silverdale Road is one such building in a dreadful state. The clock still has not been fixed.
This building could be put to good community use.

Also I was shocked to see the Fairey building in North Hyde Road gone.
I feel we need to preserve more of the history we have.

It’s amazing to think that I paddled in Yeading Brook as a kid and didn’t realise I was so close to so much history.
