Hayes Town Centre Canal Slum

Two months ago I convened a meeting between Hillingdon Council, British Waterways and the Hayes Town Centre Partnership to discuss the state of the canal in Hayes town centre and how the canal area can be cleaned up and developed into a beauty spot for the enjoyment of local residents, attracting more canal barges to visit and even to have residential moorings in the town centre. At that meeting it was agreed that both the council and British Waterways would bring forward plans for how we could improve the whole canal side area.

I urged that a clean up should be undertaken as soon as possible.

Two months on and no plans have been produced and the canal area still looks like a disgusting slum with litter and detritus heaped along the canal towpath and banks.

It seems that the Council and British Waterways do not agree over who is responsible for keeping this area clean. In the meantime whilst they continue to fall out over who shoud clean the place up, we as local residents have to put up with a disgraceful slum in our town centre.

In most other areas the canal has been opened up and cared for by the local council and British Waterways so that local people can enjoy the benefit of the canal. For years now I have benn promised as the local MP by the Council and British Waterways that action will be taken to improve tthe canal area in Hayes but every promise has been broken. I even set up the Hayes Canal Society so that we could help in regenerating the area.

I am furious that once again we have been let down. I am calling Hillingdon Council and British Waterways together again to demand action from them. If they fail us again I will be raising the issue in Parliament and asking the Government to intervene. In addition I will be exploring whether we can take legal action as a community against both of them because of the risk they are causing to our health and safety by their mismanagement of this canal side area.

I interviewed Helen Lowder about the state of the canal in Hayes town. Helen was a key organiser of the community festivals in Hayes town centre and has been involved in the discussions we are having about reviving the Hayes Canal Festival. I launched the Canal Festival several years ago but it became so successful with over 20,000 attending ovr the weekend on the Willow Tree Marina site that we could no longer obtain a license at that site because of the risk to health and safety from overcrowding. Our idea was to revive the festival and move it into the town centre. This is just impossible whilst the canal area remains in such a mess.

It is a pity that the Hillingdon council and British Waterways are not fulfilling their promise about cleaning up the canal in Hayes Town and are shying away form the issue!! If there is any doubt about whose responsibility it is, they just have to consult with other areas and see how they did it and follow the same pattern!! I hope all the local people will get together and see that necessary actions are taken by the authorities to get the canal cleaned up!!

Just to say both local people and I have undertaken litter picks along the canal and in our local parks regularly. We have another litter pick coming up in Hitherbroom Park on saturday 6th December at 10am. Local people can only do so much and we need the local council and BW to get serious about fulfilling their responsibilies. After years of promises we now need action. That is why after I got them all together yet again in Auguts to secure action. I hit the roof when I saw no results from them after another three months of waiting. Nevertheless I will persevere and continue to stand up for my town and secure action. I have been contacted by BW with another set of plans for improvements but I want to see plans turned into concrete actions before I feel confident about BW and the Council delivering.

Best wishes,

John McDonnell MP

Who else is there to blame for British Waterways and the council not delivering on promises made two months ago? You’re right, it isn’t them chucking rubbish but it is them wasting time debating who should clean it up and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to hold them to account for that. Otherwise you and any other volunteers are being taken advantage of.

I’d rather see MPs and councillors making sure that BW and the council sort out long term plans for the upkeep of the canal area than have them down there themselves with bin bags. As you said yourself, that doesn’t solve the problem in the long run.

As one of the volunteers who joined Thames 21 and British waterways earlier in the year to clean up the canal in Hayes I find the site of it all coming back really depressing.  In about 5 hours we filled a whole barge with sacks of beer cans and other rubbish and some idiots have just thrown it all back in again.

It isnt British Waterways or the council chucking rubbish in the canal.  Its local people and local businesses.  I didnt see any MP’s, councillors, or many othr local people muck in with us to clean up the towing path when we were their.
If you really want to sort it out, stop blaming the wrong people, volunteer with Thames 21, and encourage the council, British Wateways and local businesses all to pay for someone to clear up the canal every day.  Because that is what it will take
