Some years ago I helped set up the Hayes Garden Village Residents Association. This covers the estate off Coldharbour Lane in central Hayes that many local people know as the railway estate, because it was contructed to house the families of railway workers. Although many railway families still live on the estate many of the houses have been sold off and there are many private rented properties.
The Residents Association recently held its annual meeting, which I attended, and we agreed to organise a walkabout with Peter Robinson, the chair of the Association, and the local councillors, Lynne Allen and Tony Eginton. I undertake these walkabouts across the constituency to inspect the state of the local environment.
The railway estate has had some real problems with rubbish and litter dumped particularly behind the shops and on the pavements. The local councillors have reported these issues to the council but we are all concerned at the lack of an aedquate response from the council.
The walkabout gave us the opportunity to see what problems persisted and to identify the specific areas we want the council to target. Council environment officers accompanied us so that they could take up the specific issues we raised.
I interviewed Peter Robinson and the local councillors.
