Job Centre Workers Meeting in Parliament

Job Centre workers from the PCS union met me in Parliament today at a seminar organised by the union on the Government’s plans to close job centres, lay off 12,000 staff and also cut back on benefits.

I am extremely concerned at the Government’s proposals because with rising unemployment we need the services of the Job Centre staff to assist people gain the benefits and support they need to cope and also to get back into work.

Already some London job centres have been closed and the Heathrow job centre is no longer open to callers as in the past. This is just not acceptable at a time when people are increasingly in need of support.

I am backing the union’s campaign to urge the Government to think again.

I interviewed Theresa Rafferty, who is a PCS trade union representative for our local job centre workers.
