Today local councils combined with environmental groups and the local No Third Runway campaign to launch a legal challenge to the Government’s decision to go ahead with a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow. The legal challenge argues that the Government’s consultation on expanding Heathrow was flawed and failed to properly assess the impacts of expansion on air pollution, noise, the economy and climatr change.
I fully support this legal challenge and believe that it is another nail in the coffin of Heathrow expansion. I am calling on the Government to see sense and drop the whole proposal before any more money is wasted on a plan which will never be allowed to be implemented. This legal action effectively means that the game’s up on the Government’s 3rd runway plans. The legal action will result in such a significant delay in the planning process the whole project is now put at such risk any investor would have to be insane to be willing to stump up the funds to pay for what is looking increasingly like this Government’s white elephant. I am calling on the Government to face up to the reality that the 3rd runway is not going to get off the ground and to start planning for a sustainable alternative in high speed rail linking our existing airports in London and the coountry more efficiently.
