RNIB Lobby of Parliament for Disability Living Allowance

Today (Wednesday 15th October) The Royal National Institute for The Blind, RNIB, organised a lobby of Parliament. Many hundreds of people came to Parliament to urge MPs to support the RNIB’s demand that higher rate Disability Living Allowance (DLA) be paid to people with restricted sight.

DLA is a benefit paid to assist people overcome the limitations that they experience as a result of their disability. The aim of the benefit is to try and ensure that people with a disability can live and enjoy as active and normal a life as possible.

People who have restricted sight do not automatically receive the higher rate of benefit although sight loss is a very restricting condition. Paying the higher rate would enable people to obtain greater assistance, for example help with transport and support to get out and about.

Local people from Hayes came up to Parliament to support the RNIB lobby, including Mr Daniel Lynch, whom I interviewed, and Mr and Mrs Kingston.

I support the RNIB’s campaign and I am pressing the Government for action.
