I have been extremely concerned at the loss of life and suffering caused by the Israeli bombing and now invasion of Gaza. Parliament does not come back from the Christmas recess until next week. This means that there has been no opportunity for MPs to discuss the issue and to determine what role the UK government should play. I believe that the UK government could assist in mobilising an international to bring about a ceasefire by putting diplomatic and economic pressure on Israel. I have called for the recall of Parliament to enable Ministers to report on their activities and for MPs to discuss this serious international situation.
I have commented on this question in more detail on my national website “John McDonnell: Another World is Possible.”
I attended the national demonstration on Saturday, recorded Tony Benn’s speech below and also interviewed Jeremy Corbyn MP at the demonstration outside the Israeli embassy on Monday.

Why this deafening silence from the world community and especially the USA? To quote the words of a popular protest song of the sixties “How many people must die ....”

Hi John,
It was re-assuring to read your blog about the Gaza crisis and how you oppose the actions of the Israelis. Please could you put pressure on the other MP’s to call for some action so hopefully the message gets through to Gordon Brown. Have you ever considered going for the PM role? I think you’d be just what Britain needs!
