John McDonnell MP
I would like to thank you all for the support you gave me in securing my re-election as the Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington. Rest assured I will continue to work hard on behalf of our local community.
The results of the election were extremely disappointing for the Labour Party. I don’t believe this was a rejection of our policy programme or our manifesto but was the result of a decision many people took on the issue of Brexit and it was clearly the Brexit issue that dominated this election.
When the key policies in the manifesto were tested in opinion polls independently and individually, they all proved to be overwhelmingly popular. Brexit will happen now, and we’ll have to suffer the consequences.
I fear for the future of our people. For those who are queuing in the foodbanks, for those 4 million children living in poverty and 135,000 children who are homeless. Public services will continue to be cut. There will be no more affordable housing.
I believe the younger generation, in particular, will be fearful of the future of this planet as a result of the threat of climate change.
I will be standing down as Shadow Chancellor once a new leader has been elected, probably by the end of March. I will continue to represent my constituents, assisting with their problems and campaigning on their behalf.
We fought a brilliant campaign and I’d like to thank everyone who got involved.
I wish you all a merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
